Crowns and Bridges

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is also called a "cap." It's shaped to look like your natural tooth, and sits directly atop your damaged tooth, covering your whole tooth to prevent future damage. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, with the most popular choices being:

  • Stainless steel
  • Gold or another alloy
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Resin
  • Ceramic

Dr. Yoon can help you choose the right crown material for your situation.

Are dental crowns a good fit for me?

There are many possible reasons you might need a crown:

  • Dental implant cover
  • Protection for a cracked tooth
  • Protection for your tooth post-root canal
  • Bridge support

If your tooth (or implant) can't stand on its own, a crown might be a perfect fit.

How does the crown procedure work?

Scottsdale Family Dental offers CEREC same-day crowns. Dr. Yoon prepares your tooth or implant to hold the crown first and then takes 3D images of your tooth using the high-tech CEREC Omnicam. These images go to the CEREC fabrication machine, and your crown is made that same day, usually in less than 2 hours.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a group of prosthetic teeth. In areas where you're missing two or more teeth, a bridge can restore your smile, even if the missing teeth aren't side-by-side. Bridges consist of a metal frame with the replacement teeth attached, perfectly sized for your mouth.

You can choose from permanent and removable bridges. Removable bridges need daily cleaning while permanent ones are in your mouth for good, much like dental implants. Removable bridges may use crowns on nearby teeth for extra stability, and permanent bridges may also have crowns depending on the material from which they're made.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

Both crowns and bridges can last for many years if you take good care of them. Most patients have crowns and bridges for 10 years or more. Be sure to see Dr. Yoon for your regular checkups and practice good oral hygiene in between to get the best results and longest crown or bridge lifespan.
